Who cares? I do! I may not be able to see them, but others can. Having the words *I* type get changed into ads just doesn't sit well with me. I'm sure I could handle the annoyingness, but....That's not the point, ya know?

If you have some other options you'd like to suggest, I'm sure JDogg would love to hear them.

I'll be sure to give a look around.

.::Edit::. HAHAAAAAAAAAAAA

Nevermind everything I said. I'm happy with the new ads now.

I think...J Dogg, do you get paid for each time a word gets turned into an ad, or one flat rate?

I ask because I just found out I can do this: Playstation. Game Boy. Check them in IE, they're not Ads, like these will be: Playstation. Game Boy.

Maybe you should be. Like I said, J Dogg wants to run a test, to see if they're annoying enough or not, which means there is a chance that the adverts will be deemed too annoying by the admins and the site users. Since it's mainly the users who will be seeing the ads and generating revenue (after all, what advertiser will pay for ads nobody sees?), then I think you should be welcoming of intellegent comments, even if those comments happen to be "I think the adverts are annoying and get in the way of forum posting".

I wondered what the heck they were when I saw them, but when I realised, I had to laugh because it looked so strange riiight.gif But, if they help fund the site, what's the problem? I'd MUCH rather that than pop-ups or something :/

I get paid when people click on the links.

Anyway, I am not offended by people who give constructive criticism of the ads. Like I said, if they're too annoying, I will remove them or attempt to make them less annoying. I would also appreciate comments that let me know how I can make them less annoying if they are annoying.

Whether or not I am going to keep them or remove them depends on how annoying they are and how much $$ I make from them. If they're annoying and don't bring in much revenue, of course I'm going to remove them. If they're annoying and make me a millionaire, I'm keeping them in no matter what E15.gif .

Haha, nice hack Death Bringer..

The key phrase is "too annoying." Obviously we all agree that if something is too annoying we'll remove it. For example, JDogg says that he'll never do popups because they are too annoying. But is this considered too annoying? Banners are annoying on SOME level, but they're not too annoying. I don't think these are either.

On another note, IG makes a good point. At this current moment, we are not charging for membership. The moderators are not getting paid. We are doing all of this out of our own good will getting nothing (except for JDogg E15.gif ). So, maybe you can be sympathetic with us when it's frustrating when people make demands on a free service. I always got annoyed when people bitched about the videos being down, even though we've provided those as a free service for quite some time, and those are another big bandwidth sucker.

Actually, that is the entire point. You were talking before about making them less annoying...and then say that that isn't the point? What?

Don't get me wrong, this place takes great pains to rid itself of the worst sneaky crap that advertisers do with their banners. I understand that regular banner ads may not be generating a whole lot of money, maybe because they are so easy to ignore!

This new type of ad is annoying at first, but I'm sure most of us will get used to it, myself included. Why stop at 5 ads per page? Is it possible to turn all targetable words into links? If you get paid per click, and not per showing, then more ads increases the odds of a curious clicker.

I don't like being labelled as unsympathetic to "the cause" just because I'm not welcoming this change with open arms. Yes, the site is free for me to use and it IS yours to do with as you wish. I don't want to pay to post here. Advertise away.

That would prove disatrous in some posts biggrin.gif. Could you imagine what would happen to console war threads? Hmm, maybe that's a good idea after all thumb.gif.

Because it's annoying. Please read my previous post regarding annoyance and revenue.

Haha... I appreciate that. However, I would assume that companies would become suspicious if a single IP clicked a ton of times on the same exact ad. If you wanna do this (and I do not officially advocate you to do it), I would recommend clicking on different ads not too many times in a single day.

Bring back the banner ads, they aren't in the way. It's just distracting to read posts now.

Not for me (Firebird 0.7).

I think we've already established that the adhost is having problems.

Above the "about ddr | forums | buy ddr | radio | videos | song lists | locations" all I see is white.

Chances are you have a host file that has been edited. By you or someone else.

I have an edited hosts file and Firefox 0.8 and there's a banner up there. It isn't working, but there's a box that says Clickhype.com Network.

Wow, this is ridiculous. I just received the stats for the ads that ran over the weekend. We got 50 clicks on Saturday, generating a paltry sum of $2.00. HAH! I don't think I'm going to be keeping this ad for much longer than another week. 4-5 cents per click is ridiculous.

It works for me as well. I have a stock hosts file (the only entry is 127.0.0.1 localhost E10.gif) and Firefox 0.8, and the ads are there.

I only have one extra line killing a.as-us.falkag.net. Previously the banner had multiple hosts, and this only killed one particular bad banner. I was still viewing other ads despite blocking that host.

Apparently that has changed.
