Hey Death Bringer, is it just me or are you afraid of losing those forums because those are the only ones you post in?

Seriously, it's people like that you that cause the bandwidth of this place to skyrocket, and my point from before, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DDR. seriously, go talk on another forum if you're not going to talk about DDR.

BLiT, we already use Zend cache for nearly all of our static pages. In addition, almost all of those pages are gzipped. However, it doesn't make sense to gzip uncached pages because of the overhead as Cutriss had already mentioned. We have dual Xeon 2.4 GHz, 2 GB ram, and 4 disks worth of SCSI RAID, and I really don't know how to make the server go any faster...

One idea coming out of this discussion is that I can limit the ads to the non-DDR related forums only...

wait a second sherlock.....you're posting in a forum that doesn't have anything to do with ddr, only the upkeep of a subject whose subject matter just so happens to be ddr. So technically speaking, you're wasting bandwith? See, sounds stupid doesn't it. As previously stated, the forums are doing fine, and if we had problems with bandwith, i'm sure JDogg would have taken care of it.

MOOKIE, there's a big difference between this board, and Random Chat. Not to mention, in a single day, people could post so many more times than sherl0k has in this thread alone, and this thread spans over, what, two days now?

Hey, uh, Mookie. reality check: while my avatar only says "Trick" i'm listed under staff because I'm the one that keeps the stepcharts up to date. read the Stepcharts thread and find out who's been doing the upkeep. BTW, I hope I'm not patting myself on the back or making myself feel important, it's just one of the main reasons why I stick around (and I enjoy the work I do, even if it may not be a lot).

As for me not posting in my regional forum? The location where I play in isn't very active for DDR anymore, but it used to be. And when something in my area comes up, I'm posting about it. I also, being a member of the forums for over 2 years I've seen the threads in the other DDR forums repeat themselves, and I really don't feel like going back in and stating my opinon again.

Sorry if the place I post the most is in an area that probably means the most to the site.

What if we are having problems with bandwidth and JDogg hasn't taken care of it?

Are we in THAT much trouble? As it stands right now, I'm against getting rid of the "non-DDR" forums. I think they've been a big part in helping this site become as big a community as it is, even though they're not directly related to the game.

No we're not in THAT much trouble. I think people are just reacting to the addition of the ads. They're saying that they'd rather have no forums than forums with a few ads in the posts.

I know if the non-ddr forums ever left I'd be gone shortly after them. DDR was cool in 1999, but I've moved on. I'm here for the friends I've made and the community in general more than the game.

I'm not going to lie, that is the reason. You act as if it's a bad thing I want to keep posting here.

Without Random Chat / Imaging / Non-Music Games, a large portion of the more... literate members would leave. While it's a DDR website, it's not strictly a DDR forum.

Besides, have you ever BEEN to chit-chat? Jesus christ. Really, no one cares who your favorite DDR character is.

Copy/Paste Schupo and evn...

To elaborate on my other post, the reason this site needs non-DDR forums to not be a 2-month waystation for newbies is because DDR is a really stupid game to talk about. There's no strategy at all, nothing that interesting happens in the process of playing, so the DDR forums are just newbie topics like "STUPID PEOPLE AT THE ARCADE" or questions that can be answered with "PLAY MORE" or "READ THE FAQ PAGES".

There is just nothing to talk about in the actual DDR forums. You can talk about other gaming sites, but if you go to those sites you'll see discussions on things like strategy that just can't be talked about pertaining to DDR.

so i believe this thread have covered everything it needs to cover. Sherlock, i'd be impressed that you're staff, but hey, i've more important things to do. I'm just happy that Schupo got into this. He's one of the folks who make the Random Chat forum as great as it is

I really don't see the point in worrying about other non-DDR related forums. When you think about it, how many forums have you visited because of it's main basis of discussion, and have seen forums that are totally un-related to its main theme. For me, that would be ever forum I've ever visited...

If he plays DDR, then he's perfectly entitled to post, but I guess we only play DDR if we post here. While I don't particularly like the hazy miasma of lag atmosphere of this particular forum, some people might (maybe a lot, I really can't say).

Clustering comes to mind. The Awful Forums are based on about 5 heavy duty servers for processing and one for the database. It's rather extreme though. I think two servers would work just fine in this case. Getting people to donate for the extra server really wouldn't be a long shot since there's something to motivate them (e.g. pages not taking their jolly time to be generated).

Hey Sherelock!

(Alpha gets out checkbook) I'll send you a $20 check to keep the off-topic forums open for at least another 2 months! E4.gif (No, seriously, not kidding here. And maybe donations might actually be the way to go. Not required for use, but reccomended to help keep the site up.)

But seriously, I really like the off-topic areas. Yeah, there is junk. But I've met a lot of really awesome people there too. I think that removing the off-topic areas would be more detremental then people might think. It's not really that bad.

As far as advertising, I try and support the site. Every day or so I click on a banner just for the hell of it, or on a sponsored link, etcetera.

If Trimming Was Neccessary...[b] I'd hope that [b]at least one "general non-ddr" thread would be allowed to remain open.

I've never seen a butchering of my name as bad as that. I'll send you $20 if you never do that again.

Ok, I think this thread is over. Rest assured, I would never consider something as drastic as cutting out ALL the non-DDR related forums, as I never talk about DDR anyway anymore. The ad stuff--well, that all depends on how much revenue it generates, and so far, it doesn't look like it's worth it AT ALL.
