how about putting a Java Chat link somewhere on the site? it seems that there's always one mod around in the IRC room, whether it be Remy, Rampage, Phrekwenci, or IguanaGrrl. If there's a problem, go to the chat room and speak with a mod right then and there. |
Would this require the user to have an IRC program? Not a terrible idea, but that would limit its functionality. |

If there was a coded java IRC program, there would be no additional software necessary. It would simply be a java chat window with a direct link to the appropriate server and channel for DDR Freak. _________________

We used to have a java client. Problem? Sometimes people would sign on and then flood the room or do other things necessitating a ban. The only way to do a meaningful ban on IRC is using IPs, and anyone using the Java client would come from the Java client's IP...meaning it would have to be intermittently banned (thereby also banning anyone else using it at the time). It was enough of an issue that we had to remove it entirely. _________________

I just had an idea...IF someone wants to bring back the Java client, you could force someone to log in with a forums account before using it. Then the client could PM the channel bot (assuming there still is one...I haven't used IRC since spring 2002 or so. ) with the username so mods could warn or ban that account based on actions in the IRC channel.
I doubt anyone who could implement that has that kind of time to waste though. _________________

Oh, Jesus Christ, people. How hard is it to download and run an IRC client. |

Impossible, if you're on a public computer. _________________

Not very, but I think it would be useful. I'm on otherside all the time, and I hate java, but think this would be a good idea.
How about a combination of the two? A report post system which, when triggered, uses an (cgi?) IRC bot to send the following into a private channel:
<Fagbot> User Cockfun posting "Fucking pikey pricks with your two inch dicks.." in http://www.ddrfreak.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=3737263#3737263 (YourMum)
with YourMum being the name of the user who reported it. Spamming it up could result in a warning/ban just like posting HAY GUYS I LIKE HAM a million times in Site Feedback would. Admins would only have to /j another IRC channel, not do anything special. They could even set up a script to beep them when the mod bot speaks, if they care that much (or not if they dont). |
