IMO, it would just take up a ton of space. Isn't it just easier to look at the arcade, or your CS?

It would be a waste of even more bandwidth. And you know, there might already be other sites on the internet that has the Groove Radars posted.

Not unless there were values for the groove radar that were inputted. Then the radar could be auto-gen.

Or approximately 10K simple JPGs, if you want to be technical.

PNGs would be better, but that's getting into more detail than we need right now. I'm sure that if we get the data we need, and figure out a decent looking layout to put them in, it won't be that hard to do.

Generating a Groove Radar wouldn't be *too* hard since the code is already open-source since Stepmania manages to do it.

The challenge would be porting it over to PHP from C++, and adding it into the site with its current layout.

No, I mean approximately 10K (ten thousand, not 10 kilobytes) simple JPGs. (or PNGs)

Why restrict it to only MAX+ songs?

I guess you don't play Double.

There's about 700 songs.

Assuming a stepchart for each difficulty on only L/S/H S/D, that's 6 charts, for 4200 stepcharts.

However, it won't always be 700 songs.

Why make it static when you can make it dynamic?

5 axes, assuming 10 possible values for each axis...

10,000 images.

Of course, that's if we statically generate them and link them later. Better to just dynamically generate them on demand.

But then again, can't you just *look* at the stepchart, and say "hey, Max 300 has all these runs of 8ths at 300 BPM! It mst have a lot of stream!" or "Look at Bag! That's a lot of chaos!"

The groove radar is there so that you can figureout what the stepchart is going to be like without having to play the song first and see the steps. It's kind of like a preview of the stepchart.... by you dont need a preview of the stepchart when you are about to look at a picture of it.

im limiting them to songs that have offical groove radars

and i forgot about doubles sorry

so yea thats 400 or so songs with 6 each

and the best way is to make each radar not try to make a possible one foor each psossible permuitation

No, the best way would be a dynamic creation of the radar. The stepcharts could have 5 numbers attatched to them , representing the 5 parts of the radar, from 1 to 10, and the browser can read those numbers and create the radar on its own. Now you are just adding 5 characters onto each stepchart, which is much easier on bandwidth and webspace. But I still stand by my previous comment.

Creating it client-side has it's own issues.

You'll have to send the code (whatever form it may be) to the client. You have to make sure your code is cross platform. If you choose something like Flash then you have to make sure your users have the plugin. If you use javascript you have to make sure that your page can actually load javascript and that your script is cross platform.

If I had to write this I'd do it server-side with php because this is a fairly trivial problem.

Code:
<img src="blah.php?air=3&freeze=5&stream=7…" />

You find the end points of 5 with a start point in the middle of the graph and a length (v1–v5) where v# is one of the values in $_GET. That's fairly basic trig. Draw a line from one end point to the next: that's just a call to ImagePolygon(). Finally send the image to the client after doing any "eye candy" that might be needed.

It would be simple to cache and re-use images to reduce CPU load, and small to medium sized simple 3 color PNG files should be under 10kb a piece.

i cand belveve all the codeing for that would take less space than an image file

Maybe not less than *one*, no. But definitely less than several hundred or thousand. I'd hazard a guess that it wouldn't be any more than 10KB.
