I think this has been brought up before. Why don't we do a board purge? There are pages and pages of locked and useless threads. Why not get rid of them all? Or at least the locked ones? _________________

You're right, this has been brought up before.
The reason that locked threads are left visible is so that people will see them:
- The OP can see why his/her thread was locked.
- The OP can see that his/her thread was locked and not moved, lost, etc.
- The people following the thread can read the last useful posts (if any) before the lock.
- New members will see what sort of threads get locked.
Some are locked because they've run on too long, been bumped, the thread is over (ie: how do I do <x> is answered), or it's broken by some sort of phpBB2 bug. These threads may have some useful information in them but they don't benefit by more discussion. Deleting these threads would be a shameful waste of everyone's posting time and ideas. _________________

And we do periodically prune, as a matter of fact. _________________

How about purging locked posts that were locked over 6 months (or possibly a year) ago? Or how about topics that havent been posted in for a year? the vast majority of the time, if someone wants to talk about the same topic, they dont see the topic on the first page, so they start a new one.

I don't get it. Why do you want to purge them so badly? There is really not all that much of a reason to. You might as well have them there for reference. _________________

This is the funniest thread I've seen in a while. Mods should post more often.
Anyway, as long as there's no low disk space, it seems kinda pointless to trim. _________________

I dunno, i think it is just taxing to keep all the locked threads that are 20+ pages back that no one bothers to look for anymore. _________________

My only reasoning against purging would be that we routinely tell people to search first.
If they find the answer in a locked post, it better that they are content with that then to start yet another post (which might get locked as well ) and thus repeating the problem.
Not all stickeys should be purged.
The board announcements and 'where to find mp3s' in chit-chat are locked threads that certainly should NOT be purged. _________________

I can't think of a reason why you'd prune a sticky... >.> If it's no longer useful, then unsticky it... _________________

Well, the reason I know this is that the last prune killed off stuff before (I think) June 2003, and crystine's "Where to find MP3's" thread was last used in 2002, so the selection logic of the prune must be at least that robust. Hopefully moreso, as there are entire forums that need to be excluded from it. _________________

About the whole making the boards faster if we purged more often, how much faster would it really make the boards?
I doubt it would be that significant. _________________

The only noticable speed boost would be in using search. I don't think it'd be a bad idea to purge locked posts 6+ months old that aren't sticky/announcement, but, it's not my call. Mods: we can argue about this in the Forum Gods and Goddesses board. |

Maybe you should make a n00b FAQ sticky. It would help cut down on useless topics.I think you should consider it... |
