On the topic of bit torrent, With the popularity of AIJ's video section and the video thread here at DDRFreak the users are there, they just need to be educated and rewarded for helping to seed. A team of videos fans to organize and maintain a well running tracker would be a good idea, Im sure most of the focus at DDRFreak is in maintaining the crazy boards.

If a site is pushing over a TB of downloads thats definitely a sign that plunty of users are there to keep torrents up and running. I doubt anyone who is willing to host all these vidoes have enough money and space. They might hold up for a while, but they will never be permanent. BT will require less bandwidth so huge amounts of money wont have to be spent. If someone is complaining about speeds then they should be the ones donating money for faster seeds.

In the long run torrents will be a much longer lasting way of downloading media. The speeds may not be as fast as an HTTP for older torrents, yet if you have some patience, you will be able to recieve much greater content.

I think a poll should be taken to see if users would want to grab one or two videos or a whole tournament set with just one click. If the poll shows 50/50 for each side then maybe it would be smart to put popular videos on a good host and older ventage tournament sets or other huge batchs of files on torrents.

EDIT: Read the rest of that post, you can probably disregaurd this post.

I have a few videos on my web space, but they're nothing to write home about.

J, I can host maybe one or two videos, but I don't think that's what you're looking for. (I can give about 9gb/month, which isn't a ton.)

Are you looking for a single host, or a "patchwork" of different hosts?

The answer to the problem is Bit Torrent I am sure. It does work. Suprnova.org, lokitorrent.net, torrentreactor.net, and many other web sites utilize this method of file sharing to greatly reduce server load and spread it among the people who are downloading the files. Even if people don't keep the window open after they are done downloading the file, they still contributed their part because you are uploading data at the same time you are downloading it. But I'm sure that there will be plenty of seeders anyways, because a lot of people start downloads and go to sleep, leaving their computers on all night to finish the download and act as seeds for the rest of the night.

I can think of two obvious problems with bit torrent:
1) We're not a technical forum and we're not trying to serve up Linux ISOs here. I think it's unreasonable to expect the average DDR Freak user to know what a bit torrent is where to get a client, or how to use it.

2) <random list of warez site> use torrents to distribute all sorts of illegitimate files and it works great when you have thousands of people trying to grab the latest Eminem CD or Windows XP++ beta. When you try and get legal content like the latest Ubuntu release it works well for the first week after release when there are hundreds of people swamping the torrent. Trying to grab the same release a month or two later isn't any better. The only seeders are the ones setup by the Ubuntu mirrors because everyone else has grabbed their copy and stopped seeding.

In recent months I've found just picking the closest local FTP to be more reliable and faster.

IMO Bit Torrent is a great suplimental way to make files available but it is not approrpriate as a primary method for most types of content.

It's excellent to meet the bandwidth demands of a file that would cause the Slashdot equivalent of an FTP overload.

For files that aren't accessed frequently however, it's no better than FTP.

Honestly. Tell me right now. How many things do you have seeded? Do you leave them open when you play your favorite online game? If not, do you reopen them whenever you quit?

Do you leave your computer on 24/7?

BitTorrent is *not* the answer. It is *an* answer, but this is a different problem.

If this hasn't been brought up, everyone liked the DDRUK simfile packs. Do you know how many people whined and moaned because no one seeded full copies?
I would show you the comments but... yeah they're not accessible anymore.

oh hay fellow Ubuntu user. E13.gif

Yeah, BT doesn't work well if you don't have someone on a seed 24/7. I mean we *could* set the server as a seed and cap it at like 40k/sec... but if nobody else was seeding, the bandwidth goes right back to the server. Which is bad for us.

I recommend PMing Maniakk Blakk (thats the exact username) and ask about it. He said something recently about being able to host some vids.

If VxJasonxV doesn't read this first, I'll mention it to him since Deondre (Maniakk Blakk) is in Southwest and Jason actually knows him.

I will seed as many of the videos that my computer can handle if it was decided to use bit torrent as a solution. I have a Athlon XP 3000+ with 1Gig of DDR3200 RAM and 512kbps upload speed. I don't play online games so I don't really need all of that bandwidth and I could offer a few undred kbps of bandwidth to seeding the videos.

From http://www.putfile.com...

Upload Video, Flash, and Images
.jpg .gif .png - 2mb
.wmv .avi .mpg .mov .asf .swf - 10mb
Linux Dedicated Servers
Pornography Prohibited

From the faq page (http://www.putfile.com/faq.php)
May I hotlink/embed an image onto my own webpage, blog, or in a forum?
Yes, all we ask in return is that you place a link to www.Putfile.com on your webpage, blog, or in the forum post.
May I hotlink/embed a Video or Flash animation onto my own webpage, blog, or in a forum?
No, this is not allowed due to the extreme costs of bandwidth. You may place a link to the media.php page. e.g. http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=tsunamiphuket
Quote:
So, we just need to put a link to the page, not the video itself. Not too bad.

How long will my files stay online for?
Granted that you do not violate our TOS, your media will stay online for the duration of its activity plus six months. This means that as long as your video or image receives one view every six months it will stay online forever.

I'll volunteer to help get some uploaded if I can get access to the files...

I looked at putfile. The only thing I don't like about it is that by giving them videos, I lose all the rights to them, which sounds pretty harsh to me.

I have three secrets:
first secret, second secret, and third secret. If I can find a way to get more videos onto this server (pine doesnt like big email attatchments), then I suppose I could have more secrets... although by then I'm sure they wouldn't be secrets anymore E15.gif

Would your server be ok with the bandwidth rapage?

I mean, I could put a couple of the videos on my university's server...but I bet about a day after they were up I'd have the techs breathing down my neck like a serial killer on a box of fruit loops.

Ok, bad pun.

Well, we have a small college... roughly 1000 students. This also isn't the only server (although it is the most popular one). The advantage here though is that we have vacation this week, so no student in their right mind will be trying to do work. This will give us a chance see if it horribly bogs down the server, although I doubt it will be that bad.

the AIJ videos used to be hosted on the Purdue campus, they were there for a good 2-3 years without anyone complaining. It all depends on the college, really.

I'm willing to rotate some videos on a bi-weekly basis on my server to keep bandwidth down, I still have a bunch to spare.

I guarantee any videos linked from DDR Freak will have a bandwidth usage that will NOT go unnoticed. Unless you're an admin at the school, and have some kind of control over how much money the school spends on bandwidth, it is not a suitable location.
