i was browsing around looking for a wiring diagram of a softpad, when i came across this little number. in theory, it's amazing, but i wanna see gameplay, so depending on the costs i'mthinking about building one

http://www.applied-sciences.net/laserpad.html

as you can see, it just sits down, but there is no actually mat, making it great for somewhere that you need floorspace.

I've seen it before. Great if you have the time, know how and resources to build it, but they don't sell the mat on the site. It would be murder on your feet if you had bad feet, though.

Yes, but...

(Not inlining this)
http://www.applied-sciences.net/images/library/laserpad/diagram-800.jpg

Does anyone see a significant problem with this particular layout of the lasers?

On top of the answer to that, consider this;

The Applied Sciences Website wrote:
Gameplay is similar to any hard or soft dance pad with the notable exception that the playing surface is whatever lies beneath the laserpad. A button press is triggered when the player's foot (or other body part) interrupts the laser beam from shining upon the photocell. The beam is located very near to the floor so responsivity is excellent.

You will be timing your footfalls to the beat. You will not be timing your footfalls to the point at which your foot passes the threshold of the laser. I do see that they say that this shouldn't be a problem. However, I'd like to see some AAAs before I believe it. At the same time, if you do adjust to this pad even minutely, this could screw up your arcade timing. But then, practicing home timing specifically for arcade timing isn't a good idea in the first place.

Uh, wanting to point out a few things:

1: You only have a few small points of sensitivity, instead of an 11"x11" panel.

2: No way to feel where you are on the pad

3: No doubles.

4: If you step too far out, you kill the frame.

I'd say this definitely isn't a good way to go.

However, we shouldn't rule out LASER sensors.

I've logged them away as a project since June 2006. We could see them in the form of a DT900 in a year or two.

Notice how if you step too far out to the corner, you can trigger a few steps. Besides, if you get used to the "panels" being that long, it'll be a while until you can play on a regular pad again.

Man I would love to try one of these out... But it'll make dance games look even more retarted. "look I'm dancing on the floor with a square around me biggrin.gif

that would be supremely easy to do actually

just make a normal pad shell and instead of sensors underneeth the arrows have beams in a matrix that get broken when you step on the arrow (recess teh arrow and teh lazers will be as close tot he top of the arrow as you can without having them actually fiering in to or under the arrow)

That's exactly what I was thinking. E1.gif

The issue here is figuring out what pattern will get you the best coverage with the least lasers.

Here's one I put together that I felt would give good coverage in most important areas (right panel):

Left would just be inverted.

Another option, using a lot more beams, AKA costing a lot more, but giving a much more generic coverage would be a 121 square grid using 20 lasers spaced 1 inch apart.

There are a lot of possibilities with this. I'd really like to see how far the designing brains of the DDRFreak BC forum could take LASER sensors.

well if i all of a sudden see like 100 laser diodes go on sale somewhere, i'll start fiddling.

Haha, we'll be waiting for you!

btw, I think a diagonal rhombus grid would be better

Something like
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

Use, like, mirrors on the sides.

How about making it a panel pad but lasers under the panels and something to disrupt the lasers? I wouldn't trust these types of pads because I drag my feet a lot.

Have fun programming 100+ lasers into a circuitboard. >_>

Uh. . . 56 with the grid I just did.

12 if you go with 3 per panel.

The most you'd ever manage to use would be 80, which, granted, would be a massive pain in the a$$.

That's a cool idea Charlie. As long as nothing ever got into the pad ever, you'd pretty much never have to clean it. But I can imagine that it would be pretty expensive, so while it might be cool to build and have, I don't think a lot of people would buy them.

It would require either constant intense cleaning or great components. It's not something to rule out though, especially as LASER and artificial optical technology progresses.

Seismic sensors would be cool too; sensors that pick up vibrations on the panel, but holds would be a tough obstacle there.

you'd just have to do all holds like rolls(jump on each beat)

Yeah, which a lot of seasoned players do anyway, 'cause most pads drop holds.

Well what if it's a normal pad, with recessed arrows etc. but under the arrow is like a protruding object. Like so:

Then when you step on the panel it feels like normal, and the protruding thing interrupts the laser and triggers a step. Or I guess the whole panel could do that, idk.

Edit: made picture bigger.
