Maybe I'm the n00blet, but wouldn't you slip less if the pad and your shoes were bone dry? I seem to do the best BY FAR when this is the case.

Unfortunately, I live in a rainy state, so wet pads are actual common place.

Based on my observations, a little water makes it sticky while a lot of water makes it slippery.

Bone dry on normal pads would probably equate to very slightly slippery - which is the way I like it...

Add just a little moisture and it should work. Use a damp cloth, then wipe your feet on a carpet. When you hear faint squeaking sounds while stepping on the pad, then you will know that it is just right.

I use sweat.

I won't lie, I've done it too. And if not sweaty, lick palm and swipe across shoe. Yes, I'm aware of the germ thing, I minored in microbiology in college but next to the jerks who play barefoot and BLEED on the pads when they hit the brackets and the little kids who pick noses/use restroom and don't wash hands before swiping them everywhere it's a relatively smaller evil.

It's not about getting the shoe WET, it's about getting off the top layer of dust, down to the rubber with just a tiny hint of moisture left which will evaporate in like one minute anyway. Best traction ever. Also I play a lot of doubles without bar, so slippery pads/shoes can mean DEATH BY FALLING OFF.

Dudes, Dust in your shoes + Dusty Pad = Slippery
However, No dust in you shoes + Dusty Pad = Not so slippery (but still slippery)
BUT, No dusty shoes + no dusty pad = Not the best grip (lil slippery...).
What about, Dusty Shoes + no dusty pad = OMG slip
Bubble Gum shoes + clean pad = OMG grip (duh)

Remember that dust REDUCES friction between two objects, and when the friction is less, you have less grip. However, wet dust acts like mud, and INCREASES grip in a whoanelly-ish way... When you wet/sweat/lick your shoes, your making a microcospic way of what we call mud, making your shoes the pad cleaners... But that only works when you have DUST in your SHOES. If you wet/sweat/lick your shoes while clean, get ready for the one-way ticket to slippery... Because then you'll pickup ALL the dust in the pad, leave YOU with the dust in your shoes. and as I mentioned above:
Dusty Shoes + no dusty pad = OMG slip
